Brian Baxter

was born in Kaikoura in 1940. Educated at Oaro School and Marlborough College, he worked as a display artist and signwriter while learning oil painting under John Crump, Aston Greathead and Gaston de Vel.

He became a professional artist in 1973 and was one of five artists whose paintings won equal first prizes in the prestigious Kelliher Awards of 1977, the last year in which this competition was held.

A representational artist, he paints landscapes, still-lifes and florals in oils, watercolours and acrylics. He has exhibited in most of the main centres in New Zealand as well as Adelaide, Australia, and Washington DC., and his work now hangs in many countries throughout the world.
